C’est un grand nom de l’art tailleur qui nous a quittés. Il avait porté au pinacle la maison créée par son père Gennaro en 1920 en lui donnant la dimension internationale qu’on lui connait aujourd’hui. De l’héritage reçu de son père, virtuose auquel on doit la création dans les années 30 de la veste napolitaine (caractérisée par son épaule sans aucun pading et froncée à l’emmanchure et ses poches plaquées, en italien a mappina) il fit une institution dans le club fermé des grands élégants du XXème siècle.

Justement réputé pour son élégance et sa courtoisie absolues, cet amoureux des beaux tissus étendit la liste des fidèles de la maison d’Umberto de Savoie, Curzio Malaparte et Vittorio De Sica à la famille royale britannique, à l’élite de la finance internationale et aux princes arabes en passant par Lord Rothschild, qui lui permit d’ouvrir boutique à Londres dans la rue des antiquaires.

Sa famille et ses collaborateurs faisaient sa fierté, qu’il avait exprimée en les réunissant tous pour fêter ses 80 ans et il se réjouissait des réussites de ses trois filles et de son fils Luca, « tous de la même mère » précisait-il en homme de valeurs traditionnelles. 

Lapo Elkann lui rendit hommage en soulignant que Mariano Rubinacci a contribué à « faire de l’élégance italienne une référence mondiale » et son rôle dans la défense et la pérennité de la tradition sartoriale napolitaine. Un rôle éminent qui lui valut, parmi tant d’autres reconnaissances, d’être exposé au Victoria and Albert Museum de Londres et au Fashion Institute of Technology de New York.

Tribute to Mariano Rubinacci

A great name in the art of tailoring has left us. He had taken the tailor house created by his father Gennaro in 1920 to the pinnacle of success, giving it the international dimension we know today. He took the legacy of his father, a virtuoso who created the Neapolitan jacket in the 1930s (characterised by its unpadded shoulders, gathered armholes and patch pockets, known in Italian as a mappina), and turned it into an institution in the exclusive club of the great elegants of the 20th century.

Renowned for his absolute elegance and courtesy, this lover of fine fabrics extended the list of loyal customers of the house from Umberto of Savoy, Curzio Malaparte and Vittorio De Sica to the British royal family, the international financial elite and Arab princes, including Lord Rothschild, who enabled him to open a shop in London’s antique dealers’ street.

His family and colleagues were his pride and joy, which he expressed by bringing them all together to celebrate his 80th birthday. He rejoiced in the successes of his three daughters and his son Luca, ‘all from the same mother’ he specified, as a man of traditional values.

Lapo Elkann paid tribute to him, emphasising that Mariano Rubinacci had contributed to ‘making Italian elegance a global benchmark’ and highlighting his role in defending and perpetuating the Neapolitan sartorial tradition. This eminent role earned him, among many other recognitions, an exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.
